Kayley Wagner’s Approach to Photography

About the company

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am a 26 year old CG artist from Cape Town. I was always an artsy kid growing up. I had a
passion for art and nature and how they are closely connected. I loved going on holidays in the
bush with my family and grew up wanting to either design cars or be a game ranger. I took a
gap year and ended up studying animation and have been working for 3 and a half years now. I
am a CG Look Development Artist, which is someone who does tasks such as Shading and
Lighting for animation in film or advertising. You can apply the skills you learn in photography to
many elements of CG pipelines. Like we have CG cameras that we use and within those
cameras you can also set the exposure and aperture etc and that affects how everything looks.
Knowledge of colour is also something I use everyday. So having a hobby that can improve your
knowledge and skills of your career is just a perfect combo!

How would you describe your photographic style?

Soft Colour and Light

What pushed you to start shooting film?

I have always been interested in photography, but only shot digital growing up. About 2 years
ago I saw the content a close friend of mine, Ayanda Krige-@ayabehindthelens was making and
was really inspired by her work. I then asked my dad if I could borrow his K1000 and some
really old expired film he had laying around and went off to shoot. My dad is a devout
photographic collector and hobbyist. He taught me everything I know. He has been shooting film
and digital his whole life. He has a very impressive collection of cameras and I am keen to try
out his medium formats.

About the company

How do you stay motivated?

It is tough when such a fun and creative hobby becomes so expensive that one struggles to
enjoy it when you think about how wasteful you can be.
But I just shoot when I can and just really love the results even if some can be disappointing.
Film is a medium that really seems to capture a mood in a shot that can touch and move
someone.

Who is your inspiration when it comes to photography?

Definitely my dad. He just knows so much.
Also my late uncle, Patrick Wagner. He was a very talented travel photographer for Getaway
Magazine.

Where is your favorite place to shoot?

I love landscapes and nature orientated.
Cape town has tons to offer during every season so you never run out of places to shoot.
Would love to shoot more in Newlands Forest.

What is your favorite film stock?

I have shot a lot of Fuji C200/200. I love the greens that they bring out. I have also shot some
Kodak Color Plus and I must say the colours are so warm!
Keen to try some Kodak Gold and Black&White next.

What is your go to film camera?

I currently have my dad’s old Pentax K1000 and then a Pentax K2 which we bought together
about a year ago. I really enjoy the fully manual SLR’s, but would like to add a Point and Shoot
to my collection just as something that is light and I can take it anywhere.

What kind of photos do you hope to capture/ what kind of photography do you want to be
known for?

I would love to take photos that move people or make people feel something when they see it.

Do you have any future projects you’re potentially working on?

I want to learn how to develop and scan my own film. My dad happens to be fully kitted to
develop and scan his own film recently, so I would really like to try it out myself and experiment
with the process more.
